Week 15: Preparing for Goodbyes and Program Transitions

Endings can be especially difficult for children who have formed strong and trusting relationships with their mentors.

This week, we discussed how to prepare buddies gradually for the completion of the program. Visual timers, memory cards, and consistent goodbye routines can make separation feel safer and more predictable.

All ten volunteers attended our fifteenth training session, which focused on program endings, separation anxiety, and emotional closure. As the program approached completion, we reflected on how transitions affect children who depend on familiar people and routines.

Maya noted that sudden endings can lead to anxiety or regression. A child may not fully understand why a mentor will no longer appear at the usual time, especially if the change has not been explained in advance.

A thoughtful goodbye helps children carry meaningful connections forward.

Lucas created personalized photo memory cards that buddies could keep after the program. These cards offered a concrete reminder of the positive experiences and relationships developed during the sessions.

During our role-play, a buddy clung to a mentor when it was time to leave. Ethan showed the buddy a 10-minute visual timer, provided calm reminders as the time decreased, and then used the photo card to guide the transition back to the parent.

We learned that a thoughtful goodbye can provide both emotional reassurance and a sense of closure. Preparing children in advance helps them understand that an activity or program can end while the memories and skills they gained remain meaningful.
